Where are OSL classes being offered?
A collab course is offered at the MFA Design & Technology program in AMT with School of Fashion at The New School, Parsons School of Design.
Who can join classes?
Enrolled Parsons undergraduates or graduate students across from all schools (Fashion, Product Design, Design studies, Fine Arts, TransD, Design & Technology, Architecture etc). Clients are selected through an interview process. Occupational or Physical therapists are also welcome to join to volunteer their time as well as get field experience to help shape and impact the classroom.
See our friends at NYU here.
Who are clients and what are their roles in the class?
Clients are an integral part of the Open Style Lab summer program & class. Clients typically identify having a disability (e.g. paralysis, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury, amputation, autism) which results in specific clothing-related challenges. Caregivers are also welcomed as clients as they can have specific clothing needs while caring for people with disabilities.
The clients use their wealth of personal experience to contribute ideas that improve the clothing design while also helping shape the experience of future creative leaders.
Clients volunteer their time to bring students into their personal lives, to help their student teams gain an accurate understanding of how disabilities affect their lifestyles, particularly their clothing. 3-5 students are matched with a client to form a team, where they will spend time with together to better understand daily life settings, such as at home or at school. Clients and students work together to identify a clothing challenge to address, and students are responsible for designing clothing for their clients. Students then make clothing prototypes to test with their clients. Clients will be asked to dedicate to 10 classes throughout the 15 -week semester. Each class involvement is 1.5-3 hrs with sometime to meet outside the class as well.
To be considered a client for Fall (Feb-May) / Spring (Sept- Dec) classes, please email email@example.com
We want to acknowledge the support and generosity of the New School, Parsons School of Design (in particular the School of Fashion and MFA Design & Technology program) and New York University’s Occupational and Physical Therapy graduates, faculty, and alumni who have dedicated their time to volunteer.
